Charleroi move quickly to bring in Rik De Mil just days after head coach was sacked by Westerlo following final game controversy
Charleroi have announced that Rik De Mil will be the clubs new head coach, replacing Felice Mazzù. The former Club Brugge caretaker was in charge of Westerlo until Sundays 1-1 draw with Genk, after a farcical end to the game ended up with the club removing him from his position. De Mil had been brought in to the club midway through the season to keep them up and managed to do so. Now he has to do the same again, this time helping Charleroi avoid relegation from the play-offs.
It has certainly been an eventful week for De Mil. Westerlo seemed to put the blame for the ending of the Genk game, which is under investigation, squarely on the head coach’s shoulders. Now he has signed a 2-year-deal with Charleroi with the aim of keeping them in the league. The side’s 5-0 defeat to Gent on the final day, coupled with OH Leuven’s late win over KV Mechelen, meant that Charleroi dropped into the bottom four. They have a five point advantage over both Eupen and Kortrijk, with a further six points between them and last placed RWDM.
