On loan Hertha Berlin striker enjoying best season since leaving Young Boys
Standard Liege’s on loan striker Wilfried Kanga grabbed another two goals on Friday night to make it 11 goals for the season. The 26-year-old joined the Belgian side on a season long loan from now Bundesliga 2 side Hertha Berlin. His two goals came in an entertaining 3-3 draw with Sint-Truiden, with Standard throwing away a two goal lead in quick succession late on.
After excelling for Young Boys in Switzerland during the 2021/2022 season, where he scored 16 goals in 41 games, Kanga was signed by Hertha. The German side spent around €5m on the Ivorian forward, but he only managed two goals in 23 games as the side were eventually relegated to the German second tier.
Kanga spent time in the PSG academy before joining Angers in 2017. In 36 games for the French side he scored three goals, moving on to join Turkish side Kayserispor in 2020. He spent just one season there, again scoring three goals before joining Young Boys.
Standard are reportedly keen to keep him in Belgium next season, but whether they have the financial capacity to do so remains to be seen. Other Belgian clubs are also showing interest in the striker, who has a deal with Hertha that runs until 2026.
