After eight goals in five games, can anyone stop Gent’s free scoring Israeli midfielder?
Omri Gandelman just cannot stop scoring. The 23-year-old midfielder from Israel has put together an incredible run of eight goals in his last five games, including four against Charleroi in one game to end the regular season. With 12 goals this season, he has already beaten his previous season best which was eight for Maccabi Netanya. In 38 games for Gent the midfielder has also provided three assists, but his eye for goal from midfield has certainly been eye catching in recent weeks.
Not many expected much from the summer signing, with the then head of scouting saying that the player had not been brought in by the clubs scouting department. Instead, this was said to be a signing desired by head coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck. The Belgian head coach will certainly be feeling smug if this really was the case. Gandelman has become a key part of the sides midfield alongside Julien De Sart, with his late runs into the box causing problems for many defences. Furthermore, he is also a threat from set pieces.
Gent look set to win play-off two after a 3-1 win at home to KV Mechelen, with Gandelman scoring again just after the hour mark. The side have only lost once in their previous five games and face Sint-Truiden this week. A win over the Canaries will certainly end their chances of winning the play-off two and having a shot at European football.
