Boost for Union St Gilloise ahead of cup final as former Portsmouth favourite given green light
Alexander Blessin and Union St Gilloise have received good news ahead of tomorrows cup final against Antwerp. Key central defender Christian Burgess had been doubtful due to an injury, but in the pre-match press conference his head coach has confirmed that he will be available to play. The former Portsmouth defender has become a key member of the Union side over the last few years and is one of their main leaders on the pitch.
Union are looking to win their first domestic cup since 1914. The side have only won the competition twice during their history, both prior to the end of the First World War. They are looking to add a 12th league title, having not won any since 1935. They face an Antwerp side who ended their long wait for a league title last season. The Great Old also won the cup, beating KV Mechelen in the final as they completed a domestic double.
In recent weeks Union and Antwerp have faced each other twice, with the Brussels side winning both fixtures.
