Aboubakary Koita caps off successful regular season for Sint-Truiden in comeback win over Club Brugge
Aboubakary Koita struck late to give Sint-Truiden a 2-1 win over Club Brugge on Sunday afternoon. The Mauritanian international made it 2-1 in the 85th minute to get his 14th goal of the season. It caps off a successful regular season for the Canaries, who many predicted would be a relegation candidate this season. Instead, head coach Thorsten Fink has overseen a very successful season for the club, in which they played some of the most entertaining football in the Belgian Pro League. The side finish in ninth place, with 10 wins, 10 draws and 10 defeats.
Club Brugge, fresh off their win over Molde, took an early lead through Ferran Jutglà. The Spanish forward has stepped up in recent weeks, with Brentford’s record signing Thiago having not scored since the transfer to the Premier League side was announced. Despite having 19 shots in total and an xG of 2.06, they could not find another way passed Zion Suzuki in the Sint-Truiden goal. The Japanese international made seven saves in total.
American striker Kahveh Zahiroleslam scored his fifth goal of the Pro League season after half-time to level the scores, with Koita then grabbing the winner late on. Club Brugge had already qualified for the Champions play-offs but end the season in fifth place, 19 points off of league leaders Union St Gilloise. Ronny Deila’s future as the sides head coach remains uncertain.
