Former Southampton academy prospect rescues point for Cercle Brugge

Former Southampton academy prospect Kazeem Olaigbe came off the bench to rescue a point for Cercle Brugge against Genk on Saturday evening. The 21-year-old grabbed his third goal in 23 games for the side after joining on a permanent deal from Southampton in the summer. Prior to joining Cercle, Olaigbe had not had an opportunity in the Saints first team, having spent time on loan with Ross County and Harrogate Town during the 2022/2023 season.

Thanks to the Belgian U21 international, Cercle Brugge remain in the hunt for a top four finish and a chance of European football next season. They have yet to lose in the play-offs since they began, with draws against Club Brugge and Genk either side of a 3-2 win at league leaders Union St Gilloise. The side are now just two points behind Genk after the draw.

Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare had given Genk the lead in the 18th minute thanks to an assist from Joris Kayembe. Prior to Olaigbe grabbing the equaliser, Cercle had been reduced to 10 men when Boris Popovic had been shown a straight red card. Genk’s defence were certainly keen to gift Cercle and equaliser. The result harms their chances of competing for the title this season, with the side having closed the gap after two wins to start the play-offs.
