Fortuna Sittard expect former Reading, Birmingham and Barcelona midfielder to join a ‘major’ league in the summer
As reported by VI, Fortuna Sittard’s technical director Américo Branco believes that the club are likely to lose Alen Halilovic in the summer. The former Reading, Birmingham and Barcelona midfielder joined on a free transfer last summer and had offers to leave in January. However, Branco has revealed that Halilovic wants to wait for the summer to join what he believes to be a ‘major’ league.
The 27-year-old Croatian attacking midfielder has a contract at the club until 2026, so the Eredivisie side would be able to command at least some sort of transfer fee for his departure. So far this season Halilovic has scored five goals and provided two assists in 27 games across the league and cup.
Halilovic has had a varied career in terms of where he has played. After starting out at Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb, he has played for Barcelona, Sporting Gijon, Las Palmas, AC Milan, Standard Liege and SC Heerenveen. In 2020 he moved to England and joined Birmingham before a stint with Reading. He returned to Croatia in the summer of 2022 to spend one season with Rijeka.
