Graham Potter rejects Ajax’s first offer but remains the preferred choice to take over this summer

According to AD, Graham Potter has rejected Ajax’s first proposal as the offered salary does not meet the Englishman’s demands. The 48-year-old was in Amsterdam on Thursday negotiating a deal with club, although he immediately turned the offer down. Potter remains Ajax’s first choice to take over as manager this summer.

Graham Potter is said to be keen on the job, so if Ajax can meet his wage demands then we could see the former Chelsea and Brighton boss at the Johan Cruyff Arena next season. Technical advisor Louis van Gaal and Alex Kroes have held multiple interviews with Potter this month, which have been positive. However, Potter would have a huge job on his hands as Ajax are in need of a major rebuild.

Ajax are currently fifth in the Eredivisie table having suffered eight defeats and ten draws, including Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw with relegation-threatened Excelsior. The Amsterdam club, currently coached by John Van ‘t Schip, are on course for their worst finish since the 99/00 campaign. Many dismal displays and baffling back room decisions have left the European giants in turmoil, which means Graham Potter would have an awful lot to deal with if he were to take over in the summer.
