Changing internet providers

Signing up for internet in the Netherlands is pretty easy and usually done online or via the phone. Simply follow these steps:

Compare internet packages

Use one of the above comparison sites to find the best internet package for you. Check to see if the provider you want to switch to is available at your address, as not all providers are available in every location. This goes especially for people who are interested in fibre optic internet.

It’s also a good idea to check the provider’s customer service reviews online, as this will give you an indication of how the provider handles complaints and issues.

How to sign up with an internet provider in the Netherlands

Sign up for the internet provider of your choice online or via the phone and choose a transfer date. Keep in mind the notice period of your current provider, as you may have to pay a fine if you want to cancel your contract early. Also check if your new provider offers a transfer service, or if you have to notify your old provider yourself.

Please note that most providers offer a minimum contract length of one year. If you cancel your contract earlier, you may have to pay a fine.

Installation of your new internet service

Generally, your new provider will send you all the materials you need to install the internet. Most providers also offer the option for a mechanic to handle the installation, but, this often costs extra. Depending on your new provider, the whole process can take one to six weeks.

Also note that since January 28, 2022, you are able to decide for yourself which modem or router you use to connect to the internet (vrije modemkeuze). You are no longer required to use the modem or router provided by the provider. However, make sure that the modem you choose is compatible with your provider’s network.

In the Netherlands, there are three types of internet connections available: cable, ADSL/VDSL and fibre optics. Fibre optic internet is arguably the best internet connection in the Netherlands at the moment, however, it is also the most expensive option, and it may not be available where you live.

Several factors determine which internet speed you will need for your household, such as how many people will be making use of it and their online habits. Generally, if you are planning to use the internet extensively (gaming, streaming services etc.) with multiple connected devices, you should choose an internet package of 200Mbit/s or higher.

How fast is the internet in the Netherlands?

The Netherlands was the first European country to be connected to the internet. On November 17, 1988, the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science gained access to NSFnet, which is the network that grew into the internet we know today.

The average internet speed in the Netherlands is between 100 and 120 Mbps, having increased considerably in recent years, due to new technologies, such as fibre optic internet. Note though that, generally speaking, the faster the internet, the higher the cost.
