Should former PSV and Wolfsburg head coach Mark van Bommel cash in on his Antwerp success this summer?
Many in the Belgian media expect that Antwerp head coach Mark van Bommel will leave the club at the end of the season. In two years with the side he has won the domestic cup and the league, as well as the Super Cup. He is in with another chance of a domestic cup, having made the final for the second season in a row. Despite all this success, and a contract that is expected to run until 2025, van Bommel could still leave the Great Old.
For the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich midfielder, his time at Antwerp has certainly helped his reputation after struggling in the Bundesliga and the Eredivisie. In both leagues he managed to get his sides off to a hot start before petering off and struggling at the end of the season. Antwerp appeared to be going in the same direction last year, but he had clearly learned from previous mistakes and managed to secure the title on a dramatic final day of the season.
With three trophies at Antwerp, the Dutch head coach’s stock will certainly be at its highest. Feyenoord are already talked about as one possibility with the departure of Arne Slot to Liverpool. AC Milan have also been mentioned as one of the midfielders former clubs. Whatever club he ends up at, it appears almost certain that van Bommel will leave Antwerp in the summer for a new challenge.
